Although I’m new to the club and EDM scene, it didn’t take long for me to realize that Hardwell was on most Top 10 DJ lists.
As a result, I was pretty surprised when I found out that Hardwell (real name Robbert van de Corput) was going to be coming to Ottawa, my hometown, on March 6, 2016 as part of his Revealed – North American Bus Tour. Also being featured were DJs Doga Erbek, Thomas Newson and Kill the Buzz.
The show was on a Sunday night. Ottawa being a government town, I figured not too many people would go, especially considering the event was taking place at a venue near the airport accessible only by car. It wasn’t easy find someone to go with, but luckily one of my younger coworkers, Sean, was into it (a couple of his photos appear in this post).
Surprisingly, a few days before the event I got an email from the Ottawa promoter, DNA, saying that 5,000 people would be attending, and that we should arrive early.
The venue (Ernst and Young Centre) was not beautiful – it’s mostly used for trade shows – but it was big enough to comfortably hold a large crowd.
The first thing I noticed when I arrived was that there were a lot of girls wearing shorts and halters. Considering it was early March (the temperature dropped to -12C/10F that night), this seemed pretty weird. I asked a young couple about it and they explained that these girls (and some guys) were dressing as if this was a beach party somewhere warm like Miami.
The evening was slow to build, partly because of the large size of the room and the fact that many partiers got there later in the evening. But everything was well-scheduled, with the precise timings for each of the DJs respected to the minute. The opening DJs definitely did a great job revving up the crowd, so by the time Hardwell came on everyone was in a frenzy.
Of course, he played a great set. Hardwell has one of the most sophisticated senses of rhythm of all the DJs I’ve heard. During his set, he mentioned that Ottawa was a place that was close to his heart because he got a good reception there when he was starting out.
The evening was over by midnight unless you had a ticket to the downtown afterparty, which Hardwell was not appearing at. Nevertheless, for a sleepy town like Ottawa, this was a stellar Sunday night.
